Do you remember the first time you tried a pastelito? I don’t. I’m sure I was a toddler since I was born in a Cuban family…and I’m sure I loved it!

Do you have a favorite pastry or turnover? I like pastelitos de carne y pastelitos de queso but, to this day, pastelitos de guayaba are my favorite quick and easy Cuban dessert.

Personally, I love guava pastelitos without the cream cheese but pastelitos de guayaba con queso are delicious too! Que rico! It’s the most iconic part of a Cuban breakfast.

Confession: I enjoy Cuban guava pastries almost every week! If your sweet tooth is screaming for more Cuban desserts made with guava, I don’t blame you. Guava is hard to resist!

I had never made pastelitos at home until I saw Marta Darby’s recipe. I’m very fortunate to live in Miami where Cuban pastries are as abundant as the Cubans that live here.

There’s a Cuban bakery on literally every corner in Miami. Do you want croquetas de jamon or un cafecito Cubano? Just drive a block and find a bakery hidden in a corner!

But if you don’t have a Cuban bakery nearby, you can make these flaky, sweet, creamy, and addictive Cuban pastries with guava and cream cheese at home.

Step By Step Instructions

The best part of this recipe is that it’s just 4 ingredients. All you need is puff pastry sheets, guava paste, cream cheese, and a whisked egg to seal the deal.

You can use any puff pastry but I use the one from Pepperidge Farm. For the guava, I like the Conchita brand. There are several other brands but Conchita has always been my go-to!

Cream cheese is optional, in my opinion. I love pastelitos made with sweet, tart guava paste but adding cream cheese to pastelitos is a good idea too!

Place 6 slices of guava on one of the thawed pastry sheets, about 1-2 inches apart. Add cream cheese over guava slices (optional).
Place the other thawed pastry sheet over the other one with guava and cream cheese slices. Cut into 9 squares and score the tops of each one.
Cuban pastries or turnovers filled with guava paste and cream cheese. Just 4 ingredients make these pastelitos de guayaba y queso come to life!
Place them in the oven and bake at 400ºF for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown. Serve immediately!

The first time I posted this recipe, my friends asked for a care package. Funny, they can all get these guava y queso pastelitos ANYWHERE here in Miami. Just goes to show, nothing beats “homemade”.

I hope you make these and you LOVE them as much as I do!

Pastelitos de Guayaba Y Queso (Guava & Cheese Pastries)

Cuban pastelitos de guayaba y queso are a quick and easy Cuban dessert made with flaky puff pastry, sweet guava paste, and softened cream cheese. Just 4 ingredients and ready in 20 minutes in the oven after 10 minutes of prep. Serve these Cuban guava pastelitos with Cuban coffee for breakfast or as an afternoon snack!

Ingredients

  • 1 package puff pastry sheets, thawed (I used Pepperidge Farm)
  • 14 oz guava paste, (I like the Conchita brand)
  • 8 ounces cream cheese**, optional
  • 1 large egg**, whisked

Serving Suggestions

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400ºF. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper. Set aside.
  • Cut guava into thin slices. If using cream cheese, cut the block into slices too. Unfold one of the pastry sheets and place it on the cookie sheet.
  • Place 6 slices of guava per pastry sheet fold about 1-2 inches apart (you'll have 18 slices total on the entire package – from BOTH pastry sheets). Add cream cheese over guava paste slices (optional).
  • Unfold the second pastry sheet and place it over the other one that now has the guava paste slices.
  • Cut into 9 squares and score the tops of each one. No need to divide the squares. Leave everything intact. Brush egg wash on each one to get that flaky crust.
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Notes

*These pastries are best served right out of the oven. You can place them in an airtight container and reheat them for 10 seconds in the microwave. Be careful, the guava can get really hot and burn your tongue.
**To make these pastries vegan, you can substitute cream cheese for vegan cream cheese and egg wash for almond milk.
***The nutritional facts listed are a rough estimate since this recipe varies in the amount of guava and cream cheese added to each pastry. Use your best judgment.
