Receive My 5 Easy Staples To Master Cuban Cooking!

Hola! I’m Jamie.

Hola! I’m Jamie.

Miami native, first-generation Cuban-American, and the founder, recipe developer, and food photographer behind A Sassy Spoon.

Growing up, I loved watching Mami make Cuban food from scratch for the whole family using her favorite measurement of choice – un poquito (translation: “a little bit”). As a result, I began developing my own recipes inspired by my rich Cuban heritage.

Here on A Sassy Spoon, you’ll find classic Cuban recipes, Cuban-inspired dishes with a twist, and some Latin-inspired recipes influenced by my hometown of Miami.

    Common Questions

Nope, I was born and raised by Cuban parents in Miami, Florida, where I still reside today.

Yes, I do! I’m fluent in Spanish, English, and Miami Spanglish (a mix of Spanish + English). Ha!

I’ve always felt like Cuban food was underrepresented and not as popular as its Latin counterparts. As a first-generation Cuban-American, I feel the need to keep my Cuban heritage alive in the best way I know how — through food. This is why, in 2016, I created A Sassy Spoon to showcase all the tried & tried Cuban recipes I grew up enjoying along with other comfort food recipes that I love! For anyone who misses Abuela’s cooking, craves Cuban comfort food, or even if you’ve never tried Cuban food, I’m so glad you’re here! Thank you for all your support!

As a kid, I was often called “una picará” which is Spanish for “sassy”, thanks to my feisty personality. The “spoon” is partially because of my love for alliteration and the fact that I always brought home ceramic spoons as souvenirs from my travels. That’s where the name A Sassy Spoon comes from!

My background is in digital marketing where I worked with big-time clients in the culinary space. Prior to that, I was climbing the corporate ladder in the healthcare industry. After a few career detours, I finally decided to take the leap and bring my entrepreneurial dreams to life with A Sassy Spoon in 2016!

Yep! I traded a corporate office for a bright, cozy kitchen and now I enjoy developing approachable Cuban food and Latin-inspired recipes for home cooks on A Sassy Spoon.

Yes, I’m the primary recipe developer and food photographer behind A Sassy Spoon and occasionally very talented food photographers will also help me shoot recipe photos. As the saying goes, “It takes a village.” I started this food blog with an iPhone 6S back in 2016 and now use a Canon 6D Mark II. I absolutely love food photography! Here’s more info about my photography equipment.
